The new service TextPayMe allows you to send money via your cell phone. Right now, if you sign up and confirm your cell phone takes text messages, you get $5. They seem to be legit, with a mention at CNN/Business 2.0. I just signed up, and got the $5 successfully without having to give out my Social Security or credit card number:

In order to sign up, you will have to send a few text messages, which may cost you something. I have that $5 texting package through Verizon, so I look at this as paying for my texts for a month!

You can withdraw your funds via online bank transfers, or you can request a check. They also have a referral program where the referrer also gets $5. Youcan allow me to refer you by clicking on the banner below, at no cost to you.

Once you sign up, you need to make a payment in order to withdraw your $5 signup bonus. My suggestion: send $1 to a friend and have them send it back. If you have two cell phones, you can make a total of $15 — sign up the first phone, refer the second phone, then sign up with the second.   $5 signup x 2 + $5 referral = $15 richer.

Also, once you sign up, you can create an alias, so that you don’t have to give out your phone number to receive money. My alias is “hls” so if anyone wants to send money, feel free ;)

I can see some good possibilities with this service. Say you’re at a bar or restaurant that doesn’t do separate tabs, and you don’t have any cash on you. And say your friend pays for the tab, then you send them your portion through textpayme (you can add a credit card to your account so it’s like charging your cc….). Or if you buy or sell things on craigslist, you can request or send money through textpayme.

You don’t need an email…I could send you one, but all you need to do is click on the banner in my post. It has my referral id on it, so it will give both of us credit (you for signing up and me for referring).
