This is the first time I can honestly say that I’ve been completely destroyed by a trail. This past weekend Vinayak was in town, and Mark and I took him to the Grand Canyon. To give him the full experience, we hiked down the most popular trail — the Bright Angel Trail, to Plateau Point. Six miles each way, for a total of twelve VERY grueling miles. The way down wasn’t too bad, as you can imagine. In fact, other than a gripe or two from knees, I was feeling pretty darn good by the time we got to Plateau Point. Untaxed even. I was thinking to myself, “This won’t be as bad as everyone makes it out to be.” Then we started back up. OH. MY. GOODNESS. Can we say pain? I’d say the last three miles were the worst — which is funny, because by the time we got to the three-mile resthouse, it was 4:30 p.m. and the trail was pretty much covered in shade. I can only imagine what going up in scorching 100-degree heat would be like. My legs pretty much quit on me going up. It felt like they had turned into stone, and just bending my hips and my knees took every effort of my being. I kept thinking to myself “This is what the Tin Man must feel like. I could sure use some oiling here…”

The trail was a breeze for Vinayak. He was too good for us slackers, so he took off on his own. He pretty much ran down, making it to Plateau Point in just over 2 hours, and made it back up in maybe 3:45, I’d guess. I think it took me closer to 5:45 to get back up. But that includes the stops I was taking every quarter mile to give my legs a little pep talk :P

Here are some pics from the trip. The first pic is of Vinayak and I at Mather Point, before we started hiking.

Again? This would be my first time getting a ‘whupping’ while hiking. And I didn’t see you running up the trail either :P :P

Hey, this is MY journal, so you’re supposed to let ME get the last word. And it will be my tea soon if you leave it lying around unsupervised :)
