Gila Monster!

Just thought I would share a picture of my most recent critter sighting (while hiking Millsite Canyon in the Superstitions). Isn’t he a beauty? For those that don’t know, Gila Monsters are one of only two species of seriously venomous lizards. This is the first time I’ve seen one out in the wild. Apparently they spend about 98% of their lives underground, which would explain why they’re so rarely seen. Their brief surface sojourns occur mainly in April and May, when they raid nests for eggs and other spring bounty. I’m STILL giddy from this rare encounter!
